Poem: Silly Dog

21st June 2021

Inspired by a Caribbean incident I was recently told about

Silly Dog sits on a wild bees’ nest:
Silly Dog’s got no sense.
Silly Dog disturbs that wild bees’ nest –
And its owners want recompense!

Before he sat on the wild bees’ hole,
Silly Dog had heard a buzzing sound;
But when Silly Dog goes on a country stroll,
He leaves his brains in town.

Silly Dog’s bum always used to be
Something small which didn’t show –
But now the wild bees sting it big and sore:
It glows red like a volcano!

Silly Dog leaps high, high in the air
As if he’d sat on a thousand volts:
He usually ambles without a care –
Now he’s off like Usain Bolt!

Silly Dog runs, and Silly Dog runs,
And Silly Dog runs some more;
But because he’s silly, it’s ages until
He thinks to head to the shore.

At last he rushes down the beach,
Anticipating soothing bliss;
But where he puts in his bum to cool –
He doesn’t notice that jellyfish!

They say that we learn from our mistakes,
From our first steps until we die:
When he hears any buzzing in the countryside,
Silly Dog has now got wise…

…And he’s also more prudent about the sea:
It can ease the pain if you’re sore –
But not if you’re a mutt with a throbbing butt
Who plonks it on a Portuguese Man O’ War!
