Fruit tree rescues

PEAR Flattened by winter storms, it amazed me by sprouting leaves this spring. Badly damaged roots couldn’t possibly sustain it at original size, so with great regret (nice fruit!) I halved the main trunk height. Then, with ropes attached to neighbouring apples, I hauled it upright and built a support frame.

I sloshed water round its roots daily through that long dry spell.
A promising sign…? Shoots from the main trunk

APPLE Not the Sunset it was purported to be; but that’s end of season bargains for you, even from a major nursery. The wind canted it when very young; last winter considerably worsened the angle. This frame should help bear the weight of fruit.

The vertical shoot is above the graft, so it will bear true.
