Garden archaeology 29th April 2021 Chris Jessop Digging my new potato patch turned up pottery (and broken glass and old iron and…).Lady Nightingaletook the haul home for washing and sorting;a formal montage is on its way,but meanwhile this arrangement of hers is well worth sharing! The patch, just after I’d finished levelling it with the stone rake:very pleasant to finish the job with a blackbird singing, the moon rising, and Celtic Heartbeat (BBC Wales) on the radio. My stone rake: such a useful tool!I understand that those you come across in Pembrokeshirecould well have originally been local anthracite miners’ tools.
