KINDS OF HEART
31stJuly 2020
On noticing this stone upon the shore
I thought, A shallow heart;
But how did your mind first-word its reaction?
A smooth heart, perhaps…
Or were you immediately struck by its stalwart solidity?
What about imagining it as I found it:
Sea-wet, shining–
A slick heart? A slippery heart, even?
Otherwise, picturing its weight, A heavy heart.
You might suppose it left out, sunny day:
A warm heart…
But only, of course, until come evening.
Geologically, An old, old, heart;
Meanwhile, bluntly,
A plain heart
A grey heart
A dull heart.
Or perhaps you saw no heart at all,
And just thought this a sea-carving
Of some beany sort of seed!
